An Aging Portfolio of Schools

When was your neighborhood school constructed? The majority of the schools still in operation in Memphis-Shelby County Schools were built decades ago. A few like Central High, Peabody Elementary, Rozelle Elementary, and Idlewild Elementary are more than 100 years old.

Common issues with aging schools include damaged and outdated infrastructure, insufficient lighting, limited ability to integrate technology, inconsistent temperatures, and high maintenance costs. Repairs in older buildings can take special skills that are hard to find, and materials are often more expensive.
